Cannabis use has become more common in recent years, especially as more regions allow medical access.
Many people turn to cannabis to manage pain, anxiety, or other chronic conditions, often assuming it is a safer or more natural option. But as use increases, researchers are beginning to take a closer look at how cannabis may affect other aspects of health, particularly the heart.
Medical cannabis and risk of heart failure
A recent large population study examined whether people prescribed medical cannabis had a different risk of heart failure related events compared to those who did not use cannabis. Researchers analyzed health data from more than 50,000 individuals who were authorized medical cannabis and compared them to over 160,000 similar individuals from the general population. The findings showed that those using medical cannabis had a modest but measurable increase in risk of heart failure related events, including emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and outpatient care.
Importantly, this type of study shows an association, not cause and effect. People who are prescribed medical cannabis may already have underlying health conditions that increase their risk. However, the results suggest that cannabis use may be one factor that contributes to cardiovascular strain, especially in individuals with existing risk factors.
Use with awareness of potential risks
In the end, it is not that cannabis is inherently harmful, but that it should be used thoughtfully and with awareness of potential risks. For individuals using or considering medical cannabis, especially those with cardiovascular concerns, discussing use with a health care provider is important. Supporting heart health through regular physical activity, managing body weight, controlling blood pressure, and maintaining consistent sleep can help reduce overall risk. As with many health behaviors, balance, context, and informed decision-making matter most, so be sure to speak with your healthcare provider.
