A new study finds consuming more fruit, dietary fiber, dairy and caffeine may lower your risk of developing ringing in your ears (tinnitus). In the U.S., 25 million people live with tinnitus, which can lead to trouble concentrating, sleep problems and depression.
A nice bowl of oatmeal with berries, a little yogurt and a cup of coffee may help lower your risk of tinnitus, or ringing in your ears.
About 25 million U.S. adults experience the condition, which causes them to hear ringing, buzzing or clicking when there’s no external source.
A new study finds consuming higher amounts of dietary fiber, fruit, dairy and caffeine may lower the odds for developing tinnitus.
Researchers analyzed data from 8 previous investigations that looked at the impact of 15 dietary factors, including carbohydrates, caffeine, eggs, fruits, fiber, fat, meat, protein, sugar, fish, vegetables and dairy.
Diets high in fruit, fiber, dairy and caffeine were found to lower tinnitus occurrence by 9% to 35%. Fruit was linked to the biggest reduction, followed by dairy, caffeine and fiber.
The researchers say, “the primary underlying mechanisms may involve the protective effects of these diets on blood vessels and nerves, as well as their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.”
But they stress their findings can’t establish cause and effect and should be interpreted with care. They say higher-quality, large-scale studies are needed to confirm the relationship between dietary intake and tinnitus.
