A new study finds getting the daily recommended amount of fruits and vegetables has an immediate impact on sleep quality.
Eating more fruits and vegetables during the day may stop you from tossing and turning at night.
According to a new study, getting the recommended daily amount of fruits and veggies has an immediate impact on sleep quality.
Researchers asked 34 young adults to complete dietary surveys and wear wrist monitors to measure sleep disruptions – like brief awakenings or shifting into a lighter sleep mode.
The results showed people who ate more fruits, vegetables and healthy carbohydrates had fewer disruptions and better sleep quality at night.
The researchers estimate that eating five cups of fruits and vegetables a day could improve sleep quality by 16% compared to eating none.
The study co-author says, “Dietary modifications could be a new, natural and cost-effective approach to achieve better sleep.”
More research is needed to determine exactly how the connection between produce and slumber works.
