Women of color are less likely to receive prompt follow-up testing after an abnormal mammogram, a new study finds.
Researchers say minority women are less likely than white women to undergo same-day diagnostic imaging and biopsies even when their medical facilities have the necessary technology and capabilities.
The researchers analyzed data from more than 1.1 million women who underwent screening mammography at 136 facilities across six U.S. states between 2010 and 2020.
The results showed Black patients were 44% less likely than white patients to receive same-day follow-up, while Hispanic women were 39% less likely and Asian women 26% less likely.
The lead author says these racial disparities are causing extreme anxiety for many women. She says, “If you're able to do a diagnostic workup on the same day instead of making them wait to schedule a follow-up visit — which might create a headache with work or transportation — that’s better for the patient.”
