A new study finds women who don’t take care of their oral health have more migraines, body aches and stomach pain.
If you’re not regularly brushing and flossing, you may end up with a lot more than a toothache.
A new study finds poor oral health is strongly linked to migraines, body aches and stomach pain in women.
Researchers analyzed data from 186 women… 67% of them had fibromyalgia, a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue and cognitive problems.
Participants with the worst dental health were 60% more likely to experience moderate to severe body pain and nearly 50% more likely to report migraines, according to the results.
Using advanced genomic technology, the researchers also identified four specific oral microbes associated with certain pain conditions.
They say these findings suggest a potential relationship between the oral microbiome and the nervous system.
The lead author says, “Our findings are particularly important to fibromyalgia, which, despite being a common rheumatological condition, is often under-recognized.”
While more studies are needed, the researchers say taking good care of your dental health can help improve overall well-being.
