A new study finds the more ultra-processed foods you eat, the higher your risk of dying prematurely from all causes.
The more ultra-processed foods you eat, the higher your risk of dying before your time, a new study warns.
Ultra-processed foods or UPFs typically contain added sugars, salt, unhealthy fats, artificial colors and flavors. And they provide little fiber, protein or vitamins, according to researchers.
Examples include frozen meals, hot dogs and cold cuts, breakfast cereals, packaged cookies and cakes, and soda.
This new study compared dietary surveys and mortality data from eight countries… Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The consumption of ultra-processed foods ranged from 15% of total calories in Colombia to more than 50% in the U.S.
Overall, the results showed each 10% increase in UPFs was associated with a 3% greater risk of death from all causes. But the risk of premature, preventable deaths by country ranged from 4% in areas with low intake to almost 14% in areas with high intake.
For example, in 2018, 124,000 premature deaths were attributable to the consumption of UPFs in the U.S., according to the researchers.
The lead investigator says, “High consumption of UPFs has been associated with 32 different diseases, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, some types of cancer and depression.”
He says policies that deter their consumption and promote local, fresh and minimally processed foods are urgently needed.
