A new study finds the COVID-19 pandemic hit students with anxiety, depression and ADHD especially hard — and for many, the challenges to engage in learning continue.
Are kids still struggling to stay focused in school after the COVID-19 pandemic?
Many students lost interest during the shutdown — but new research shows children with mental health conditions continue to face challenges.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 136,000 U.S. children collected before, during, and after the pandemic.
Overall, nearly 1 in 5 students showed signs of school disengagement during the shutdown.
Among 12- to 17-year-olds with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or behavioral issues, disengagement was two to three times higher — and according to the researchers, remains above pre-pandemic levels.
Experts say these students faced added barriers, including disrupted routines, limited access to care, and lingering social isolation.
The authors urge pediatricians to screen for school disengagement early and connect families with support before academic and emotional setbacks deepen.
