Student athletes with ADHD take longer to return to the classroom and the playing field after suffering a concussion, new study finds.
Student athletes with ADHD are more susceptible to concussion and may suffer more severe symptoms, a new study finds.
Between 4 and 8% of young athletes have ADHD, according to researchers.
For their study, they analyzed concussion recovery outcomes in more than 900 male and female athletes from 60 high schools.
The results showed athletes with ADHD took longer to return to the classroom and longer to get back to the playing field or court.

Female and younger athletes were also more likely to experience extended recovery times for both learning and sports.
The authors say, “Health care providers must be aware of the elevated risk of prolonged concussion recovery among high school athletes with ADHD.”
They say female sex and age should also be considered potential risk factors.
