The peak of summertime or early fall may offer great opportunities to ride and explore your world from a different point of view. Maybe a new road, path or trail is inviting you to discover exercise in a new way. Here are a few tips to help you decide the best type of bicycle for your kind of riding.
Types of bicycles
Hybrid bikes–
are multi-use bicycles available in comfort or performance models sitting in more of an upright position. These bikes are perfect for riding paved and light gravel paths made mostly from alloy or steel.
Mountain bikes–
are designed primarily for single-track and double-track dirt trail riding. More basic bike designs have rim v-brakes and typically front suspension only. Technological advances have led to disc brakes, front and rear suspension and shifting upgrades among other improvements. Many of us may have this kind of bicycle in our garage. Its versatility makes it a great all-around bicycle for riding around town or local metropark systems. For those who prefer to mountain bike, many trail systems offer beginner to advance trail riding options to suit any rider.
Road bikes-
are designed with performance in mind. Lighter weight than your typical bike these are manufactured out of alloy, steel and most popular carbon fiber. If riding down a rolling country road sounds inviting then a road bike with drop handle bars to improve your aerodynamics could be a good fit. Local charity rides, bike tours, and weekly road group rides with pre-planned routes offer a great opportunity to ride with others in a safe environment.
Cyclocross bikes-
and its culture are on the rise in the United States. Cyclocross bikes borrow aspects from a traditional road bike such as the drop handlebars and similar frame geometry and then combine aspects from mountain biking with a shorter tub tube for improved bike handling and easier to pedal gears.
If you prefer gravel road rides and some off-road riding then a cyclocross bike could be a combination. Cyclocross racing continues to grow and flourish as a way to extend the road racing season in the fall and winter months in Europe in the early 1900s. These races are generally thirty minutes long with several laps of a mapped course often including small wooden barriers to hop over, water features, road or paved paths, dirt and woods areas.
BMX–
and dirt jump bikes are single speed bicycles associated with more trick or park style riding. In peak summer local cement bike parks and BMX dirt tracks are a great place to get involved in your local community and foster riding in a younger generation.
