When Cannabis Edibles Go Wrong

August 26, 2026 by Vicki Doe

By Gabe Sanders PhD, NSCA-CSCS

Edible cannabis products such as gummies, chocolates, and drinks have become increasingly common in the US.

Legalized cannabis is now available in 24 states and medicinal in 40 states. Because edibles often look like regular snacks, it can be easy to forget that they contain psychoactive compounds.

While many people use cannabis intentionally, a growing concern among clinicians is unintentional ingestion, particularly when adults unknowingly consume products containing THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

Cannabis Edibles have psychoactive effects

A recent research review examined cases of adults who accidentally consumed cannabis products and later sought medical care. Accidental exposure to cannabis edibles can lead to a range of symptoms such as anxiety, confusion, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and changes in heart rate or blood pressure. For someone who does not expect these effects, the experience can feel sudden and alarming. In some cases, the reaction can be strong enough that people seek medical care for monitoring or treatment.

One challenge with edible cannabis products is that the psychoactive effects often take longer to appear than inhaled cannabis. Because of this delay, a person may consume more before realizing the drug is taking effect, which can increase the intensity of symptoms.

Responsible use and storage are key here!

Cannabis products, especially edibles, should be clearly labeled and stored safely to prevent accidental ingestion. Individuals who choose to use cannabis should pay attention to dosage, avoid confusing cannabis infused products with regular foods, and keep them out of reach of others. As cannabis availability continues to expand, understanding how these products affect the body can help reduce preventable medical emergencies and promote safer consumption practices.
