While tobacco use is less socially acceptable now than it was two decades ago, tobacco use still accounts for roughly 12% of deaths for people greater than 30 years old. Worldwide statistics suggest that tobacco is responsible for nearly 8 million deaths.
Alternatively, traditional smoking and smokeless tobacco products are now being replaced by e-cigarettes, which come in a variety of flavors enticing young people to try e-cigarettes thus eventually leading to tobacco dependency.
Health agencies launching the MPOWER approach
As a result of the tobacco issue, a combined effort by globally recognized health agencies is aiming to eradicate tobacco use altogether.
While this tobacco use is likely never-ending, the agencies are launching the MPOWER approach.
- M -stands for monitoring tobacco use and prevention policies to assess if they are effective.
- P- stands for protecting people from tobacco users and 2nd hand smoke.
- O- stands for offering people to get help quitting.
- W- represents warnings about tobacco use and the high risk of death associated with its use.
- E- stands for enforcing bans on tobacco and banning advertisements on such products.
- R- stands for raising taxes on tobacco products making them expensive for users and trying to force people to quit by negatively impacting their finances.
Regardless of the tactics employed by health agencies, people like me and you can make a difference. More often than not, tobacco users want to quit, but they simply do not know how, or they do not have the willpower to fight the urge.
With tobacco use, there is a chemical (Nicotine) addiction as well as a behavioral, habit addiction. It sometimes can be the ritual or habit they enjoy more than they are addicted to the nicotine itself.
As a person who care, it is our role to try and help people stop tobacco use and be a source of strength, encouragement, and accountability in order to help them improve their health and wellbeing.
