Starting and developing a successful business is challenging, time-consuming, and creates times of uncertainty. Mental toughness and mindfulness, though often discussed in the realm of sports, are equally crucial in the competitive world of business.
Recent research by Ajilchi et al. in the domain of sports psychology has shed light on the role of mindfulness training in bolstering mental toughness and psychological well-being, an insight we can adapt to benefit women in business.
Mindfulness and mental toughness
Their study involving female athletes found that those who underwent a 7-week Mindfulness–Acceptance–Commitment program showed significant improvements in both mental toughness and psychological well-being. So, what's the connection to business?
Business environments are often high-stress, with intense competition and pressure to perform. Cultivating mental toughness, an attribute that allows one to perform consistently under stress and pressure is a game-changer.
Mindfulness, which promotes focus, self-regulation, and non-judgmental awareness of one's thoughts and emotions, can act as a catalyst for developing this mental toughness. It can empower women in business to remain resilient amidst challenges, maintain focus during complex tasks, and foster a positive outlook, thereby enhancing overall psychological well-being.
A new perspective
While mindfulness has long been touted as a tool for stress reduction and emotional management, its potential to augment mental toughness offers a new perspective. By incorporating mindfulness training in their daily or weekly routine, women in business can hone a vital competitive edge and foster a healthier mental space.
The findings of Ajilchi and colleagues underscore the significance of incorporating such techniques in high-stress environments. Just as sports coaching has embraced mindfulness training to enhance performance, it is high time that the business world followed suit, equipping its workforce with the mental tools to not only survive but thrive.
