Alcoholic liver disease can occur in individuals who drink excessive amounts of alcohol for years. The extreme and prolonged ingestion of alcohol can damage the liver, which is an essential organ allowing us to process the foods we eat. Damage to the liver disrupts other internal systems in the human body.
For example, alcoholic liver disease can result in alcoholic lipidosis also known as fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease is excessive fat in and around your liver that is diseased due to alcohol consumption on a regular or daily basis. One of the easiest ways to prevent alcoholic lipidosis is to stop drinking alcohol. Simple, right? But not for everyone.
The alcoholic fatty liver disease leads to Hepatitis
When alcohol is ingested on a regular basis in copious amounts, the liver has to work overtime to metabolize or break down the alcohol, which is a form of sugar. As this occurs regularly, the body will store the excess calories as fat which occurs both under the skin (subcutaneously) and around the liver and other vital organs.
In the end, excessive fat around the organs, especially the liver can result in death or liver failure, which is not reversible. More often than not, alcoholic fatty liver disease will lead to hepatitis and then alcoholic cirrhosis, if not treated and if alcoholic ingestion does not stop.
To stop drinking alcohol is a challenge
While the primary solution is to stop drinking alcohol, helping a person stop is a challenge. An ideal goal is to always work on cutting back alcohol intake before a total elimination tactic is commenced.
Once you help a person reduce the intake, perhaps the next best step is to switch to light or non-alcoholic beer, as opposed to hard liquors and heavy beers that are calorie packed. While people may respond to stopping cold turkey, other people enjoy the taste of alcohol and a non-alcoholic replacement may be necessary.
In the end, a person troubled with alcoholism must stop drinking to prevent alcoholic lipidosis. The liver is a regenerative organ and to further aid liver regeneration, exercise can significantly improve a person’s road to liver recovery.
