Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. There is ample research suggesting Vitamin D has the potential to reduce the risk of stroke. Vitamin D is a nutrient that is essential for many bodily functions, including bone health, immune function, and cardiovascular health. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the potential role of vitamin D in stroke prevention and rehabilitation.
Vitamin D deficiency associated with increased risk of stroke
Recently published work by Marek et al. reviews the existing evidence on the relationship between vitamin D and stroke. The authors found that vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of stroke, particularly ischemic stroke, which is a stroke due to poor blood flow and reduced oxygen.
Notably, vitamin D supplementation may improve outcomes after stroke by promoting brain repair and recovery. After reviewing the available literature, the authors concluded that there is some evidence to suggest that adding vitamin D to your daily diet or taking a supplement may be beneficial for stroke prevention and rehabilitation. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings and to determine the optimal dose and timing of vitamin D supplementation.
