Your Brain on Endless Scrolling of Short Videos

August 19, 2026 by Vicki Doe Leave a Comment

By Gabe Sanders PhD, NSCA-CSCS

Short videos have become a daily habit for millions of people.

Social media platforms filled with fast; entertaining clips make it easy to lose track of time while scrolling through one video after another. While these short bursts of content may seem harmless, scientists are beginning to ask whether constant exposure to short form media might affect how our brains focus and process information.

Dependence on short video and brain activity patterns

A recent study explored how frequent use of short video platforms relates to attention and self-control. Researchers recruited young adults, about 21 years old, to assess their tendency toward short video addiction using questionnaires and measured their brain activity.

The results showed that participants who reported stronger dependence on short video platforms displayed brain activity patterns linked to a lower ability to maintain focus and resist distractions. Higher short video addiction scores were also associated with lower self-control.

While short videos are not inherently harmful, constant exposure to rapid, short-form content may make it harder for the brain to maintain deep focus over time. This pattern may be especially important for children, teenagers, and college students who are developing study habits and learning skills. Frequently switching between short bursts of entertainment can train the brain to expect quick rewards and constant stimulation, which may make longer activities such as reading, studying, or problem-solving feel more difficult.

Concentration and deep learning

Over time, a reduced ability to concentrate can interfere with deep learning, memory formation, and sustained academic effort. For students, this may translate into difficulty staying engaged with lectures, textbooks, or complex assignments. When focus declines while academic demands remain high, frustration and anxiety can increase. Creating balance by limiting scrolling, taking breaks from short video platforms, and regularly engaging in activities that require sustained attention, such as reading, studying, or exercise, may help support healthier cognitive habits and learning.
